The Henry’s Cool Yard initiative began with a group of energetic and enthusiastic parents who recognized that the school yard was in desperate need of attention—the infrastructure is old, uninspiring and getting dangerous… half of one play structure has already been removed.
The children spend a big part of their day outside so it should be safe, inviting and stimulating. It is crucial for their physical and intellectual development.
A Steering Committee was formed by a group who are committed to making this a collaborative project. A contest was held for the children to name the project and they came up with many great names. The top names were voted on by all the students and Henry’s Cool Yard became the project’s official title.
To date, a School Ground Design Consultant came into the school to survey the students (and teachers) about their ideas for improvement. A survey also went home to all the parents for their input. A design was developed and we are in the process of having it approved.
This will project will be ongoing for several years due to both its scope and cost and will be implemented in phases. The total cost of the project could range from $60,000 to $400,000 depending on the number of phases and changes.
Our committee has already received a $10,000 grant from the City of Ottawa for trees that were planted in the spring of 2013. Children and families from Henry Larsen have been watering and caring for the trees.
Fundraising will be ongoing. We will be looking to the Henry Larsen community to support our fundraising and to get involved in helping us obtain grants, seek funding and support from local community groups as well as the City of Ottawa, local businesses, and the school board.
In order for this project to be a success it will require commitment from the entire Henry Larsen Community. The momentum and support for the project is building and is contagious. Revitalizing the schoolyard is an exciting and worthwhile project because of the tremendous benefit to the children and the entire community.
