Our School

Henry Larson ES

We appreciate and recognize that our school is on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory, and we thank the Algonquin Nation for sharing this land with us.

Our School

Henry Larsen Elementary School is a suburban JK-8 triple-track school that opened in November of 1986. Founding students chose to name the school after Henry Larsen. In the 1940’s, Larsen and the ship named the St. Roch navigated the Northwest Passage. In 1950, the St. Roch also sailed from Vancouver to Halifax via the Panama Canal, becoming the first ship known to circumnavigate North America. The Larsen family still has close ties with the school and continues to participate actively in the life of the school. Our school motto, “Through Caring and Sharing We Learn” truly lives, as the entire school has participated in such charitable and community activities as the Terry Fox Run as well as several local food and clothing drives. Donations to various charitable organizations are made on an ongoing basis with money raised from various student activities. The caring focus of these activities has strengthened our community and provided many authentic learning opportunities for students. Parents, guardians and staff have always worked together to build an effective and stimulating learning community, one that fosters self-respect, care for others, and the rewards of a job well done.

Our Community

A Message from School Council

Students and staff benefit from the participation and collaboration of our very involved and caring community partners. Each year, many volunteers help in classrooms, make special presentations, help with field trip supervision, host events like Monster Mash and Family Movie Night, and participate in monthly School Council meetings. The School Council works within the guidelines set out by the Province and the OCDSB. In cooperation with the teachers and staff, the Council helps with fundraising, gives input to the School Code of Conduct and provides a forum for parent /guardian concerns. The School Council has collaborated successfully with area police and the municipality with regards to the safety issues and concerns of parents/guardians. All community members are welcome to attend meetings. The Council’s biggest undertaking to date is the new schoolyard project, called Henry’s Cool Yard. This has included a new play structure, new benches and an outdoor classroom. This project has benefited students of all ages and the community as a whole.

Many opportunities exist throughout the year for parents and guardians to have input in the School Improvement Plan, and to bring forward ideas and issues at School Council meetings.

Safe Schools Initiatives

Code of Behaviour

We are proud of the students, educators and parents/guardians at Henry Larsen E.S. Through partnerships between home, educators and students, students will acquire the skills and attitudes that will help them to meet with success in a safe and caring school setting. 'Let's be Successful' is the aim of the Code of Student Behaviour for Henry Larsen E.S. The Code contains expectations for student behaviour that will contribute to success through the development of positive attitudes toward learning and interaction with others. The provisions of this Code of Behaviour will foster self-discipline and enhanced self-worth. Students will grow to view themselves as successful contributors to the school community who act in accordance with established values essential to the well-being of the individual and society as a whole. This document focuses on ways to improve behaviour rather than to punish negative behaviour.

Main Goal: To teach students to make responsible choices and to recognize that there is a range of consequences associated with each choice.

Principles: Being Respectful, Being Responsible, and Becoming a Good Citizen.
